Convergence - Remembering 25 Years of Activism in the Central Walbran Valley

On the August long weekend I drove out to the central Walbran Valley to participate in an event called Convergence. The idea was to celebrate/remember/mark the 25 years that people have been actively protesting the logging happening in the valley as well as building hiking trails and providing information for others to come and spend time in the valley for recreation.

The event was put on by the Friends of Carmanah Walbran, the Wilderness Committee and a whole host of other volunteers, many of whom where active in 1991 when the protests first began.

If you aren't familiar with the Walbran Valley, you can see on this map that the Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park is shaped kind of like a PacMan or Godzilla, with a wide open mouth. That 'bite' part is the Walbran Valley. It was NOT included in the park when it was created in 1995. It contains some of the last standing old growth Cedar trees on Vancouver Island (and the world!) including Castle Giant, a tree that is almost two thousand years old. My photos from the weekend can be seen here.
